I was invited to attend the monthly meeting of Norwich Kinship Carers this week to meet kinship carers and hear of their experiences raising the children of family members. Each one had a unique, and often heartbreaking, story to tell. The cost emotionally and financially on families affected by kinship care is high and the support and friendship offered at each monthly meeting is a much-needed lifeline.
Kinship Care is when a child lives full-time or most of the time with a relative or close friend, usually because their parents are not able to care for them. Nationally, there are more than 180,000 children in kinship care. Kinship carers receive little support, which is why Kinship, a registered charity set up to offer advice and support, is so vital.
